you're reading...

just like you

“Don’t admire me. Respect me, yes, but don’t look up to me — look at me! I’m not a clever character in a book or a play; I’m not a statue or a god; I’m not anything more than anybody else. I’m a person, a person who works hard, tries hard, and gets lucky, same as you.

So, while it’s nice that you find me impressive, that you think my friends must ‘respect me a lot’, I’d much rather you didn’t say or think that. I’d rather you just see me as a person just like you, trying to make it the same way anybody else does in this world. That way, when I say: ‘Hey, you’re great, I like you’, it’s not a thing. I’m not being bashful, I’m not being condescending, it’s not a thing and then you can easily say the same back to me, if you feel it.

Do you? Feel it, that is? Do you like me?”

"Raw," she said. "I want something primal. I want something bare and naked. I want you to give me this life raw, unbidden, unhidden, free, fair, and true. Can you do that? Can you do that for me?"

One may only try.
