Modern Love: Don’t Settle

Tyler Hilton has this great song called “Kicking My Heels” and it starts with these fabulous lines: “Why you keep me around when you can have anyone in this town? Am I the best you hoped for or just the best that you found?”

I never, ever want to have to ask those questions of anyone. And I never want to be the person who needs to answer them.

Advice about love is conflicting and unavoidable. Some people say “settle” and others say “hold out”. Me? I say don’t settle but don’t hold out for something perfect because perfect doesn’t exist – only perfectly imperfect – and that, truth be told, when you’re in it, is more than good enough.

“Don’t want to worry the rest of my life. Just want to stay here and have a good time.”

So don’t let the one you’re with worry; go in with all you’ve got and have a good, good time.

"Raw," she said. "I want something primal. I want something bare and naked. I want you to give me this life raw, unbidden, unhidden, free, fair, and true. Can you do that? Can you do that for me?"

One may only try.
