Modern Love: The Dante Opening

Nice is a little boring, did you know that? Kind is weak. Secure is intimidating. Thoughtful is dithering. Reliable is forgettable.

Mother never told you that, did she?

That’s because she taught you how to be an upright, stand-up person – but I suppose that doesn’t necessarily do when it comes to love. Today we seek drug addictions, viper’s tongues, selfishness, and callous indifference to care – no, we don’t actually say that, but we look for “spontaneity, wit, self-will and independence, and le superb bon vivant“; I suppose too many times we get what we wish for, not what we need.

Do tell, which of Dante’s sins must we aspire so as to be worthy of a little attention and caring? Lust? Greed? Violence? Gluttony? Or was it Blasphemy?

Oops, my mistake, Dante’s Inferno was all about the descent – these are not aspirations, things to ‘rise up’ to…

Right?

"Raw," she said. "I want something primal. I want something bare and naked. I want you to give me this life raw, unbidden, unhidden, free, fair, and true. Can you do that? Can you do that for me?"

One may only try.
